Platform
Languages and new sites
How Aeon News handles the reader's language, the admin language and what is set up automatically on a new site.
Last updated 14 October 2026
Aeon News is used by newspapers in several languages. The language of the site decides the texts readers see; each editor can choose their own language in the admin.
Reader-facing languages
The texts readers see, such as bylines, “Published” and “Updated”, sharing, search, comments, the News Cycle and the 404 page, are available in Swedish, Finnish, Norwegian Bokmål and English. More languages can be added; German is next.
The site language decides:
- the texts above, with defaults that can be changed in Aeon News Options;
- addresses: writer pages at
/skribent/in Swedish,/author/in English and/kirjoittaja/in Finnish, and the search and opinion pages in the same way; - short dates in the news ticker and lists, for example 12/10 in Swedish and 12.10. in Norwegian.
The admin language
Each user picks a language under Users › Profile. The editor’s boxes, labels and help texts are translated into Swedish and Finnish, with English as the base, so a Finnish editor and a Swedish editor can work in the same site in their own language.
A new site
A new Aeon News site works from the first page view. When the theme is activated, or on the first visit to the admin, the platform sets up what is missing:
- Article topics, Visibility and the English edition taxonomy, with the front-page placements Front page, Latest news, Sponsored on the front page, Featured posts in the third column and Fixed 3rd position on the front page, named in the site’s language;
- a Search page with an address in the site’s language.
Nothing is changed on a site where these already exist. Settings that have never been saved fall back to safe, translated defaults, so articles and the consent banner display correctly from the start.
Before launch
Go through Aeon News Options once and save it, set up the privacy policy page and the default widgets, and connect sharing, push and analytics as needed. See getting started.
