Build and publish quizzes

Quiz is a dedicated content type for knowledge, depth and audience engagement. Give it a clear title, introduction and featured image where they help readers understand why it matters. Publish only after the questions, outcome and surrounding article context have been reviewed together.

Choose a format

• Knowledge quiz tests verifiable facts with correct answers and score bands.
• Personality test maps answers to editorially defined profiles.
• Matching guide compares a reader’s answers with defined profiles, such as policy positions or practical options.
• Opinion compass helps readers compare stated positions. It needs documented, current source material and careful wording; never imply a broader verdict than the questions support.
• Anonymous survey collects answers without presenting an individual score or profile. Explain the purpose, data handling and limits before readers take part.

Choose the lightest format that answers the editorial need. A survey is not a poll, and a matching guide is not a scientific assessment.

Questions and answers

Each question supports two to six answer choices. Knowledge quizzes need one marked correct answer; profile-based formats connect answers or questions to the intended profiles. An optional image, caption and credit can provide context, and answer images can be used where they make the choice clearer. Apply the same rights, credit and accessibility standards as for article media.

Test one clear fact at a time. Avoid double negatives, tricks and answers where several choices are defensible. Mark a question as extra important only when double weighting is editorially justified, and make sure the result still represents the full set of questions fairly.

Profiles and results

Knowledge quizzes can show tailored messages for different score ranges. Personality tests and matching guides use profiles with a name, explanation and optional image. Keep every outcome explanatory, proportionate and linked to relevant reporting where useful. A low score or weak match should encourage learning, never mock the reader.

Readers can share a completed result. Preview the shared result and the article context so neither overstates what the format can establish.

Publish and insert

Publish the quiz before placing it in an article. In the article editor, use Insert quiz to choose a published quiz, or use the quiz’s provided insertion control where the workflow calls for it. Place the interactive after enough context for readers to understand the question, and add a transition back to the reporting after it.

AI assistance

An agent or other AI support can prepare a first question set from published coverage. Editors must verify every claim, correct answer, date and source before publication.

Publication check

Preview mobile and desktop. Complete it with contrasting answer paths to verify weighting, profile mapping, score bands, result copy and sharing. For an opinion compass, validate each stated position against its source; for an anonymous survey, confirm the reader-facing explanation. Update or withdraw the quiz when underlying facts change, and pair it with article polls or comments and audience dialogue only when each format has a distinct purpose.
