Authors, co-authors and columnists

The author system makes a byline more than a line of text. Readers can reach a profile with biography and published work, while editors control how an author is presented for each article type.

Author profile

A profile can include a standard photo, dedicated columnist portrait, biography, role, location, beat summary, website and newsletter link. Publish only contact details that the organisation intends to make public.

The biography should explain the writer’s beat, relevant experience and roles important to transparency. Avoid internal or short-lived information.

Byline and author box

The newsroom can set signature position and whether the author’s biography appears in the article. Article-level treatments are Standard, Column and Hidden. Hidden bylines should be used sparingly under a clear accountability policy.

Multiple authors

Additional authors assigns co-authors to a story, useful for investigations, collaborative reporting and major live events. Credit everyone with genuine journalistic authorship; use the appropriate credit field for photography or editing.

Columnist format

Column mode uses a stronger portrait treatment than a standard story. A dedicated columnist image can appear on the front page and article view, optionally alongside featured media. Use consistent portraits with adequate resolution and verify face crops on mobile and desktop.

In the article view, the format can combine an opinion label, an alternate headline treatment, topic link, author identity and a dedicated portrait without making the page feel detached from the rest of the newspaper.

Profile archives and trust

The author page gathers a contributor’s work and supports transparency. Keep biographies, roles and images current as assignments change.
