News dimensioning and editorial weight

A daily newspaper must show that stories carry different weight. Aeon News makes that judgement visible through placement, headline treatment, image position and article layout.

Common levels

Major lead story. A large featured image and prominent headline in the main feed, suited to the day’s most important reporting.

Medium story. A smaller, normally right-aligned image and more compact headline provide visibility without competing with the lead.

Smaller main-feed story. The story remains editorially selected but appears without a featured image in the feed.

Latest news only. The article is published and listed chronologically without entering the principal front-page column.

Front-page image adjustment

The active presentation choices are full width, right aligned, no featured image, columnist photo, and columnist on front page with featured image. These are not merely crop options; they form part of the editorial hierarchy.

A larger article view

Single Post Layout switches between standard and full-width presentation. Reserve full width for investigations, visual reporting and other work that benefits from greater space. Editors can instead hide featured media in the article when an image is only needed in listings or a brief should feel restrained.

News-desk routine

Decide the story’s weight before choosing its treatment, then inspect the actual front page. A single preview may look balanced while the combined page does not. Revisit dimensioning as the news cycle changes; a lead can become a medium story and later remain discoverable through topics, Popular Posts or related reading.
