Typography, colour and dark mode

Typography

Global controls cover body text, article category, topic, metadata, news labels, summaries, standfirsts, information boxes, latest news, secondary headings and several light and bold headline styles.

Define body text and the default headline first, then introduce specialist treatments for columns, culture or analysis. Test languages with long words before finalising the scale.

Colour system

Theme options include backgrounds, primary and secondary colours, links, trending accents, labels and comment areas. Maintain sufficient contrast and use accents sparingly so editorial hierarchy remains visible.

Dark mode

Dark mode can default to light, dark or the reader’s system preference, with optional custom dark CSS. Test widgets, forms, adverts, logos and embeds; otherwise a white advert or dark logo may become unreadable.
