Categories, sections and section pages

Categories form the newspaper’s permanent editorial structure, normally representing desks such as National, World, Business, Culture, Opinion or Sport. They should remain stable, understandable and broad enough for continuing coverage.

Choose a primary category

Each story should have one clear principal category. Aeon News supports selecting the primary term when an article belongs to several categories. The primary term can inform presentation and SEO integrations, while secondary categories provide additional entry points.

Do not assign many categories merely for reach. Use article topics for events and subject clusters that cross section boundaries.

Category archives

A category archive gathers a desk’s articles and can carry its own page title and identity. Categories may also affect continuous reading, related content, front-page modules and exclusions from selected flows. Review links and editorial rules before renaming or restructuring them.

Opinion and specialist sections

Debate, guest essays and letters can use their own section structure, disclaimers or sidebars, clearly separating newsroom reporting from external opinion. See debate, letters and opinion formats.

Permanent front-page modules

Widget areas can keep the latest opinion, analysis or culture visible on the front page. Such a module is a shop window for a category, not a substitute for a well-organised section page.

Language editions

The theme supports localised labels, slugs and dedicated English views. Define URL and language structure before launch; a language edition should use consistent translated section names.
