Aeon News uses article topics to connect stories belonging to the same event, narrative or continuing beat. The capability is also described as story threading or the topic system.
When to use a topic
Create or reuse a topic when several articles concern one clearly bounded event, such as an election, court case, conflict, investigation or sponsored series. The topic appears with the article and links to an archive of the related coverage.
Topic versus category
A category is a permanent editorial desk. A topic is more precise and may be temporary. An earthquake may be a topic within World, while an energy-policy debate can connect Politics, Business and Opinion.
Primary topic
When several topics are assigned, editors can identify the principal one. This helps the platform and supported SEO tools choose the right context. Reuse established spelling and check existing terms before creating a near-duplicate.
Tags
Tags suit people, organisations, places and recurring detail concepts that should not become sections. They can improve archives and internal discovery, but long lists of weak tags add little value.
Topics complement continuous reading, which normally selects the next article from the same principal section. Sponsored series can also share a topic archive and a clearly identified sender.
